'Eternity' close up
When I make something that I like a lot, it feels really good to know that it is going to someone who will appreciate it.
The word ‘Eternity’ is enshrined in the history of Sydney. Arthur Stace roamed the streets for 20 years writing ‘Eternity’ in copperplate writing in chalk on pavements and walls across the city. He was moved to remind us of the larger scale within which we live.
In 2000, Sydney’s gift to the world was the word ‘Eternity’ written in lights on the famous Harbour Bridge during the Millenium Fireworks celebration that ushered in the new year/century/millenium. As Sydney is one of the first cities in the world to welcome the new year, our Eternity set the scene for the worldwide celebrations.
Eternity
The master replied. "Consider the tallest mountain in the world, higher than the highest clouds. Imagine a small bird that once every thousand years, would fly above the mountain and in doing so, one of its wings would touch the mountain and wear away an infinitesimal piece of the mountain. Once every thousand years the bird did this and eventually wore the mountain, with the impact of its wing, down to a flat plain.
You might believe that this wearing away of the mountain by the bird’s wing would be eternity, but you would be wrong.
It would no more than the essence of the beginning of eternity."
(Paraphrased from "Shakespeare’s Planet" by Clifford Simak)
